Say wha’?! An iPhone in a hue other than black, white, or silver? While a red model has been rumored since before the 3G even launched, we’ve never thought about a pink one — let alone one hitting eBay. The text on the back of the device convinces us that this isn’t a simple ColorWare job, but there aren’t any photos of the back of the packaging either. Our take? Some OEM in Asia whipping up custom colors. But hey, Macworld’s just under a week away, so who knows?

iRex’s Digital Reader 1000S didn’t exactly do a whole a to to distinguish itself when it debuted alongside its two other 1000 series counterparts a few months back but, judging from Engadget Chinese’s hands-on of the unit, it seems to at least hold its own against your average e-book reader, even if it may not be able to justify its premium price tag ($749). On the upside the 10.2-inch, 160 dpi display appears to deliver as expected, with it provided a fairly comfortable reading experience, although some small text may have you reaching for the zoom function. Unfortunately, the device as a whole seems to be a tad on the sluggish side, and there is that small matter of the price, which puts the iRex well above the likes of the Kindle and some other upstart e-book readers. If it feels like forever to you since OQO’s Model 02 hit the market, your instincts are pretty darn good. But if you were overly optimistic that the Atom-powered prototype it showed off back in August (pictured) would eventually become a reality, you — sir or madam — take today’s golden crown. In a recent Digital Experience! email blasted out to media members worldwide (full blurb is after the break), we’re very clearly told that OQO will be on hand to demonstrate its new Model 2 . Said UMPC will pack a 1.86GHz Intel Atom CPU, a touchscreen OLED display, 2GB of RAM and global 3G connectivity. OQO even goes so far as to say that it will offer performance “up to twice as fast as its predecessor.” Did our heart just skip a beat over a UMPC? Why, yes it did!

OQO, Inc. announces the new model 2 with the Intel® Atom™ processor, the world’s first PC OLED display, and worldwide 3G capability. Based on the 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor and 2GB RAM, the OQO model 2 offers performance up to twice as fast as its predecessor and includes an embedded touchscreen for easier input.

We’ve already seen it go down unofficially, but we’ve received word from HTC today that Android’s coveted “Cupcake” branch of updates and fixes — or at least a majority of it — will likely be making it to the G1 in the future as a legitimate over-the-air push. HTC isn’t involved in deciding what updates get pushed to the G1 or when, but given the update cadence so far and the G1’s support for Cupcake’s capabilities, the company believes that it’s just a matter of time before T-Mobile makes it happen. The timing is still a big question — HTC’s more or less out of the loop on the schedule, and it’s up to Google and T-Mobile to figure out how it’s going to play out. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more!

Seeing how it’s the end of the year, it’s as good a time as any to formulate a list of 2008’s killer smartphones — and with an 8-megapixel cam rounding out a what’s-what list of awesome specs, the S60-based Samsung INNOV8 really needs to makes the cut. In fact, it’s so hardcore — arguably the most powerful S60 phone ever released — that it seemed like a forgone conclusion from day one that we wouldn’t be seeing it in North America (yeah, we’re jaded like that). Samsung might have other ideas, though, now that we’ve seen a version of the INNOV8 garner FCC approval with WCDMA (presumably 7.2Mbps HSDPA, to be specific) on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. Given that Samsung’s mobile division doesn’t really have a direct relationship with end users in the States, we’d expect this to be a branded set for either Rogers or AT&T — but at any rate, whichever carrier it happens to be, we salute your infinite wisdom.

Mmm, do we like where this could go. Some engineering soul has managed to get the open-sourced XBMC onto a MID — Compal’s Atom-powered Jax10, to be precise. In theory, at least, this combination would make for a decidedly incredible portable media player if the price of these Mobile Internet Devices were to hit a reasonable level. Sure, many of the Cowon / iriver / Archos units support just about every file format out there, but you’re still limited by whatever ecosystem comes loaded in. Have a look at the demonstration vid after the break, but don’t blame us if you suddenly get the urge to buy a MID.

ASUS’s R50A UMPC has been sort of lost in the company’s flood of Eee PCs, and maybe for good reason — the crew at UMPC Portal just reviewed the $2,000 handheld and came away unimpressed. Although the software package overall was described as “atrocious” and the lack of a keyboard was annoying, the biggest problems were all essentially related to running Vista on the 1.33GHz Atom Z520 CPU with 1GB RAM — you can delete bloatware and use a bigger stylus, but you can’t fix “pretty bad” performance on the lowest possible graphics settings. Ruh roh: Sony’s upcoming VAIO P supposedly has a similar 1.33GHz Intel chip in it and runs Vista. Here’s hoping Sony’s got something a little more impressive up its sleeve for us than what ASUS managed to put together here — otherwise the full R50A review at the read link might be discouragingly prophetic.

We’re not really sure where to begin with this one, because the awesomeness is so thorough and so intense that we’re basically at a loss for words; we’ll see what we can do here, though. In brief, a HoFo poster has thrown up what appear to be slides from a Rogers event detailing the carrier’s release plans for the better part of 2009, and seriously, if you name a badass handset, odds are it’s here. Samsung will apparently be bringing the 8.1-megapixel Pixon, for starters, and Sony Ericsson will be throwing its name into the huge-cam hat with the C905. Turning our attention to Windows Mobile, the X1 is scheduled for release “around August if not sooner,” Motorola brings the lowly Q11, and HTC adds the Touch Pro, the Touch Viva (an unusual choice considering HTC’s intention to send it to emerging markets), and possibly the Touch 3G. Nokia will be offering the 5800 XpressMusic in the middle part of the year, Moto will be bringing a pair of 5-megapixel phones in the VE66 and ZN5, and finally, it seems RIM is signed up to bring the all-GSM 9520 Storm with WiFi — a feature sorely missing from the Verizon and Vodafone versions — and a 3G remix of the 8200 Pearl series flip that’ll have a front-facing cam for video calling (yeah, no joke, they offer it up there). So look, AT&T, you have two options here: either crib off this presentation and make it happen, or we hope you get bought by Rogers. Your choice.

Remember that wild, all-black Dash we peeped a couple days ago? We have no intention of scuttling your hopes and dreams, but aside from a few cosmetic differences (they removed the aluminum front piece, the keyboard has been spaced out a little bit, and the OS has been bumped up to Windows Mobile 6.1) it looks like the ‘new’ Dash isn’t all that new after all. But who cares if there’s nothing revolutionary here? Just take a look at the bright side — maybe this means we’ll be seeing a new Manhattan sometime soon.

We’ve already had the pleasure of checking out the Aigo Patriot in its natural habitat, and now we’re finally being treated to the same with its Gigabyte-branded counterpart. The Atom-based MID has been unboxed all official-like over at UMPC Fever, and the photographer didn’t even shy away from snapping a few with the lid off. Have a look yourself in the read link below, but don’t get too attached — so far as we can tell, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to get it imported from a foreign land.
