Now that the cat’s out of the bag it was no trouble tracking down HTC’s S740 this morning, and just for kicks we rammed the phone up against the Touch Pro, which we subsequently rammed against the Touch Diamond and an iPhone for a generally violent display of smartphone force. It is worth noting that while the S740’s keys are similar to the Touch Pro’s, they’re not quite as deep or clicky, which leads to a rather sub-par typing experience by HTC’s standards. That glossy mirror finish on the phone screens isn’t doing them any favors either — even when wiped smudge free it seems to impede viewing — and we must say the Touch Pro’s matte finish makes the Diamond and iPhone 3G look cheap in comparison. Oh, and when asked about the Dream, the HTC rep quickly replied “we don’t know anything.” It was worth a shot, right?

With hope of a summer release fading with the passing of each and every day, Boy Genius Report cites a “pretty solid bit of info” that the BlackBerry Bold is now pegged for launch on AT&T on Thursday, October 2. So if you see a throng of three-piece suits starting to gather around your local store around September 28 or 29, yeah, that’s probably why.

Although Lenovo’s slick IdeaPad U8 has been floating around in prototype form for a while, it only made its formal debut at the Olympics recently, and now it’s starting to appear on Chinese websites — Zol.com.cn has a huge unboxing and review, while Yesky says it’ll be priced at 4,999 yuan, or about $731. That’s a little more than the “smartphone pricing” we were promised, but we’re guessing those of you looking to import this Asia-only piece were likely always expecting to throw down some coin for it. Google has wrapped up judging on its very first Android Developer Challenge, and some twenty dev shops (or in some cases, individual developers) are finding themselves considerably richer as a result. Of the fifty apps to make it through to the final round, ten have been awarded $275,000 each and another ten have made off with a cool hundred grand — good coin for some really good ideas. As you might expect of anything being backed by Google and the Android platform, a good number of the finalists made location-based services an integral theme; take grand prize winner Locale, for example, which automatically switches device settings based on your current location (if that’s not a “why didn’t we think of that?” kind of product, we don’t know what is). The more we scan it, the more we realize that the list of winners reads like a who’s-who catalog of apps we know we want installed on our Dreams out of the gate — and more importantly, it looks like Google has a great way here to encourage best-of-breed Android development over the long run.

It’s a little difficult to delay a device that hasn’t gotten a more specific release window than “the second half of 2008″ (from official sources, at least), but Sony Ericsson is doing its darnedest. The scuttlebutt at IFA is that the XPERIA X1 has been delayed to the end of the year, and a Sony rep confirmed to us that it’s looking like December 2008 or January 2009. To blame is the software, specifically Windows Mobile 6.1 (or perhaps SE’s implementation of it), which appeared to be actively destroying the display units Sony has on display at IFA — of the three devices, one had some green status lights, one didn’t work at all, and one turned on briefly, only to crash hard and never return again… a pretty poor showing for day one of the show. Some hands-on shots are below, glaringly void of actual device usage.

We’ve already seen early pictures and heard a release date for GamePark’s newest handheld — the Wiz — but now Engadget Spanish has gotten their hands and eyes all over the device, and they’ve brought back photos to prove it. As you can see from the pics, the portable console will be offered with more than one style of casing, and apparently the company is setting up some type of App Store-like service which will allow users to purchase and download software, as well as share their own homebrew apps. According to our team, it looks like that October 8th street date will be pushed back till sometime in November due to issues with the right control pad (which GamePark is working to correct). Until then, you can just feast your eyes on the gallery below.

Be still our hearts! After months upon months (upon months) of waiting, the tight-knit team behind the ultra-potent Pandora gaming handheld has finally divulged the information we’ve been clamoring for: the ARM Cortex A8-powered device will begin shipping before Christmas 2008 for £199.99 in the UK. The first batch will consist of 3,000 units, and the team is hoping that all of those will be sold out before the first one leaves the dock. There’s no word on how costly it’ll be for Americans, though we’re crossing our fingers that it’ll sell for a few bucks less than the $360 we find when simply converting pounds to dollars.

There’s no two ways about it — getting Twitter functionality on your Nintendo DS is pretty difficult. In all seriousness, you should probably remain content with sending tweets from your handset and / or computer, but those who just can’t turn a blind eye to a hack won’t be able to look beyond this one. For starters, the Twitter for DS application is based entirely in Spanish, so unless you’re halfway fluent in the language (or are just really good at deciphering Google’s translations), you’ll likely be baffled. Still, a great reward awaits you if you’re able to pull it off — sending a message to all your devout followers that you just tweeted from a DS.

Evidently fearing some outbreak of freedom and excitement, Sony has notoriously guarded its PSP’s WiFi access closely, adding features such as Remote Play at a snail’s pace, and keeping such obvious adds as “ad-hoc” over the internet at bay. But no longer(ish). Sony is bringing ad-hoc online multiplayer to the PSP this fall, with a firmware update to allow the portable to network over the PS3. You’ll also be able to get social during gameplay, with text and voice chat in the new online mode. Additionally, the PSP is finally barging on to the PlayStation Store via WiFi, and Sony’s going to kick things off with a free downloadable game, “Mainichi Issyo Portable.” The best news is that this is compatible with all three PSP generations, so just because you can’t afford The Screen of Awesomeness doesn’t mean you’re out in the cold.
